You’re Allowed to be Selfish

I’m about to defy everything my parents once taught my five-year-old self on being a decent human being in one sentence:  In college, You’re allowed to be selfish. Now when I say this it does not mean that you can just disregard all moral standards and be a complete jerk, but rather cut yourself some slack when establishing yourself in your new world. People my age are way too hard on themselves because theres a lot at stake, but giving yourself a break every once in a while can make everything a little less scary. So what does being selfish in this new sense mean?

It means you’re allowed to stand up for yourself, even in times when others think you’re not right. You are the only one who knows whats best for you.

It means you’re allowed to cut people off, because you do not owe anyone anything. Especially if they aren’t contributing in a positive manner to your life.

It means you’re allowed to act and make decisions for yourself. You’re in charge of you, its not up to your parents anymore, so don’t keep living your life a certain way just to keep them (or anyone else for that matter) happy.

It means you have no one to impress, at least for a little while. Obviously you want to be able to impress future employers with your stellar grades and resume, but you have 4 years to work on that. Socially, you have zero obligations to set any standards. Its not high school anymore.

It means this is a time to develop and work on me, myself and I. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing, or what someone might think. College is a time to work on just you without outside influences to worry about.

It means you can explore every possible option out there to find whats best for you, whether it be the new option in the dinning hall or a random class you’ve been dying to take.

It means you shouldn’t settle for less. This is the time to learn not let people walk all over you. If something or someone upsets you, speak up about it! Whats the worst that can happen? Chances are you’ll never see the person again, and better yet you have zero obligation to if they aren’t a positive addition to your life. People will also learn to better respect you, and will rely on your honesty.

The best part of accepting all of the above are the people that accumulate around you in the process, and who stick by the improved version of yourself. These people can be old and new friends, but regardless of where they came from they are in for the long haul. They’ve seen your wackiest and most fragile sides, and are there for you as much as you’re there for them.

College Life Hacks: Keyholder

Hi Homies!

So this is probably the easiest and most useful college life hack in the books. It comes in extra handy if you want to leave your dorm without having to carry anything, and it keeps your room key safe and secure. I use it all the time in combination with my wallet phone case, so I have everything with me but all I have to carry is my phone, which fits easily in my pocket anyway.

Step 1: slip the hair tie through the key hole like this:

Step 2: Pull the knotted end through the loop on the other side of the key hole, to create another knot like this:

Step 3: Pull the knotted end all the way through, and pull tight:

Step 4: put on your wrist and you’re done!

Like I said, its probably the easiest way to carry your key when its not on a key chain and it’ll stay on all night so you’ll never have to worry about losing it while you’re out. It also doubles as an extra emergency pony tail holder, just leave the key in and use as normal!

My Freshman Dorm Room!

Here it is: the habitat of yours truly, this where I’ve lived the past most eventful 9 months of my life. There are so so so many memories in this one little 15×13 ft space, and I still adore my little home I made while away at college. I lived in a double with one roommate in one of my university’s main dorms, and this is just my side of the room. The room came stocked with a bed (I first lofted it when I moved in: BIG MISTAKE. Do NOT loft your bed, there are so many options for storage solutions that make a dorm way more comfortable un-lofted), a desk, shelf, dresser and hutch (which is supporting my bed and not pictured).

Before arriving I had zero clue of what the room looked like, including the size of the closet. This was very intimidating, but luckily most dorms have standard sizes for furniture no matter where you go, so try not to let that stress you out.

Most of my decor is from Target, including my comforter. It is a lot easier to make a dorm feel home-y than most people think. The things that I think made the biggest difference were personalized canvases (I made some myself with canvases and paint from Michael’s), which you can replace with pictures if you’re not feeling artsy, and the white twinkle lights. They do a lot to warm-up the vibes and atmosphere of the room and doubled as a nightlight when my roommate went to sleep and I was still studying.

My Roomie and I had a collective project throughout the year that worked great as decor, while also being a way to keep memories. We called it “The Wall of Thots” which is an endearing and glorified way to describe some of the memories we included on some of the post-it notes. I’ll leave the rest to the imagination. Basically, all you need are some pictures, post-its and tape.  We put everything up in rows so it looked more organized, but you could totally make it mis-matched.

One of the biggest pieces of advice I can offer is to not buy clutter for your dorm. I am 100% guilty of this. I for one am the queen of getting carried away at Target. Accepting my problem is the first step to fixing it. Anyways, let yourself buy a couple things like lights and cute pillows but DO NOT get more than that. Yes the cute picture frames would look fab on your desk, but is it really worth taking up valuable space? No. This is why picture walls exist. Set up the essentials and then go back to target with an idea of what you still have room for.

P.S. More specific Dorm posts to come- this is just an overview post 🙂

Birthday Suit- What I Wore on my Birthday

Since I’ve been living in lulu shorts and sorority tanks recently, I decided to dress-up for the occasion. During the day I spent most of my time on the lake in a swim suit, but at night I transitioned into a preppier outfit for a family dinner:

  • Swimsuit: H&M
  • Shirt: Urban Outfitters
  • Jeans: Forever 21
  • Shoes: Target
  • Arrow Necklace: Etsy
  • Belt: LOFT
  • Sunnies: Forever 21

My 10 Daily Makeup Products

Hi Homies!

Recently I’ve been thinking about a few staples in my makeup collection that I use everyday I wear makeup – which have been diminishing with the summer heat. As I unpack my things and transition from dorm to home life, I found I’ve narrowed down what I use pretty significantly, and have learned to prioritize and favorite fewer products due to the lack of space at school. Considering my lack of decision making abilities and tendencies, this is a huge freaking deal thus meaning that these products are bomb and absolute musts. Disclaimer: This is my full-face routine that I use when I decide to look like a decent human being, not what I do when I’m just running out the door-I’ll make a post on that later 😉 Drumroll please, here they are in the order I use them:

  1. Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream in light to medium: I apply this all over right after I wash my face in the morning. I love it because its lightweight, has spf, and provides just the right amount of coverage. FullSizeRender 8.jpg
  2. Maybeline 24 hour color tattoo in Barley Branded: THIS IS EYESHADOW GOLD. I’ve gone through at least 3 of them for a reason. Its everything proof and provides a nice base that locks shadows in for the whole day. FullSizeRender 9.jpg
  3. Urban Decay Naked2 Basics: I use Skimp all over my lid for a wash of color and Frisk and Primal in my outer crease. This pallet is perfect because its so little and has huge color payoff. FullSizeRender 7.jpg
  4. Maybeline FitMe concealer in 20 Sand Sable: I live by this concealer. It provides the perfect coverage and matches my skin color perfectly, which is saying alot since most drugstore concealers make me look like a pink monster. Its also crazy cheap for the quality. A college girl’s dream. FullSizeRender 12.jpg
  5. Rimmel Stay Matte Setting Powder in 005 Silky Beige: Same goes as above, good color, coverage and price and also keeps my oil at bay for the whole day. FullSizeRender 13.jpg
  6. NYC bronzer in Sunny: THE drugstore bronzer. Its not too orange or brown and is 100% matte, also under 5$ and a steal in my book. FullSizeRender 5
  7. Nars Orgasm Blush (Wet n’ Wild’s pearlescent pink is a good dupe): I apply this with the Real Techniques blush brush, and it gives me the perfect everyday blush.
  8. Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow pomade in Taupe: This stuff is everything proof and seems like it lasts forever. Its a little more on the pricey side but a little goes a long way and is a fool-proof way to fill in your brows
  9. Maybeline The Rocket mascara in blackest black: I can never emphasize enough how much I love Maybeline mascaras. This one particularily has my heart because the brush creates such effortless, huge defined lashes. FullSizeRender 4
  10. Maybeline eyeshadow in champagne fizz as highlight: Using an eye shadow as a highlight may seem weird, but its the best decision I’ve ever made. This little guy looks good on so many different skin tones, and stays on my face. Coming in at under 5$, it takes the cake compared to other drugstore highlighters . FullSizeRender 11

First post

Hi fam-

Welcome to my blog!  I’m glad you’re here. In the midst of the summer haze I’ve found my self endlessly bored with being on break from university. Never thought I’d say that, but alas here I am. Since I figured I should do something with myself, and I felt I needed a creative outlet from my business side, I ciphered I’d create a space to share my college adventures with others while also updating you on my current fashion & beauty trends/ favorites.

The biggest struggle I faced transitioning from high school to college as the oldest sibling is that I had absolutely zero insight on what my freshman year was to bring. I didn’t have many older friends that I could go to for advice, so I found myself constantly trying to find solid pieces of advice from you tubers and Pinterest. Unfortunately,  no one really had any kind of specific advice apart from “be yourself, be responsible and don’t be stupid”, which wasn’t really much help with making friends and going through things like sorority recruitment. It also seemed like nobody was talking about the kinds of things I was the most lost with, like figuring out majors and tuition, because they aren’t the glamorous side of the college experience.

My mission is to put all of my experiences and advice into blog posts to help the girl I was a year ago, who is sitting in her room freaking out about college and what this new chapter would bring her.

Here goes nothing.

Ringing in 19

Welp. I somehow managed to survive a whole 19 years of life, and its been quite the experience. As I enter my last remaining year of teenage-hood, I can’t help but reflect on all of the wonderful people that have entered my life, and all of the memories I’ve made in the past couple of years. I just want to say thanks to all who have been there to listen to my highs and lows each and every day, tolerate my Grey’s Anatomy tirades and sub-par puns. You guys are the ones who have made me who I am, cheesy as it is, I wouldn’t be Cass without you. Farewell 18, and here’s to 19.
